by Mehmet Kaplan
Deciding to change a product you've used for a long time is difficult, whether it is a coffee table in your living room or a trivet in your kitchen. We want the new one to be more stylish and functional. Already the designers work for this purpose and constantly aim to create more functional and more elegant products. The OMMO design team creates kitchen accessories for the same purpose. They won many important design awards such as Good Design Award and Reddot Award with their designs. I talked to Warren Wat, Sales and Marketing Manager of OMMO, to learn more about OMMO.
Warren, I would like to start with the motto of OMMO. What does 'GOOD DESIGN IS FOR EVERYONE' mean?
Today the market is overwhelmed with choices of products. Unfortunately, we forget, for what a product is made. We believe everything made needs to be humanistic. A product should be conceived by universal design that fits for everyone to use. All of us, whoever we are, can enjoy a thing of good design in an equal manner.
OMMO Hoop
Could you tell us about OMMO?
OMMO is a new brand of household products, owned by OMMO Co., Ltd.
The boss behind OMMO is a Chinese entrepreneur who runs a factory making plastic products.
How would you describe OMMO's design and manufacturing philosophy?
Design should not be superfluous. Instead, it should be simple and functional. We aim to add little something to life, inspiring for a little more fun while we use our products in daily life.
OMMO Diga
What have you changed in the traditional design process to make a difference?
The market is much broader nowadays and we try to blend the best from the East and West. Inspirations come from nature, objects, living, everything around us so as to bring a little change to the market.
Could you tell us about OMMO products and their common features?
Form follows function. Of each OMMO product, each element is a natural outcome of the function, a style characterized by timeless form. Combined with a colour palette gifted from nature, it comes out as the iconic feature of OMMO items.
OMMO Tiers
How do you decide to start a new project and run to the end? Do you make a plan or only expect inspiration?
We are more pragmatic and organised when it comes to starting a project.
We do market research regularly to explore new products to develop.
Then, we will talk to the selected designer from the list of contact about our wish list on the new product idea. Of course, it involves fro-and-back communication and understanding during the development process until the end of the design. In-between, we do quite certain research and studies on the flexibility and technical aspects.
OMMO Lasso
In a sense, they are proof of your success. Could you tell us about the design awards that OMMO won?
We got the Reddot Design Award from Germany for Flip and Lasso. Both are trivets made of silicone which is a special plastic. Silicone is soft enough to bend and fold while it is tough against heat.
We also got Good Design Award from Japan for Hoop, Diga and Torus.
Hoop is a serving bowl of the modular design of which each part can be stacked together as a single piece for serving while each part can also be used separately.
OMMO Hoop
Diga is an all-in-one bowl that allows washing, draining and serving in a single tool. The trick is the base disk which turns for drainage and turns another way round to lock for soaking, washing, mixing and serving.
Torus is a ring-shape tea infuser. The turnable metal tea leave compartment allows it to clip or hang on the rim of a cup to fit different sizes of cups.
How can our readers follow OMMO?
