Interview with Interiors Photographer Helynn Ospina

Although her undergraduate degree was in biology, her real passion was always photography. In 2012, she established her own studio that focuses on interiors, travel and fine art photography. I talked with Helynn Ospina about architectural and interiors photography.

Designers create furniture and accessories by using all their skills. The architects combine the experiences and architectural approaches they have acquired over the years and design unique buildings. When the works of architects and designers come together, they can create a magnificent interior. However, in order for us to see these works, interiors photographers such as Helynn Ospina should take over the work and show that scene to us with their own perspectives. I talked with interiors photographer Helynn Ospina about her career and the importance of interiors photography.

Helynn, you picked up your first camera at the age of 12. What was changed in your life?

It was the first thing in my life that was really my own. I remember I would spend hours just tinkering with the lens and settings trying to figure out exposures. I wasted a lot of film in those days!

Biology to Art, could you tell us about your story?

People are often surprised by this transition but the two subjects are intimately related in my opinion. My undergraduate degree is in biology - This led me to work in a few biotech firms but after a few years I was feeling a bit burned out and couldn’t fathom going back to grad school for a PhD so I started to think about what other career things might interest me. Photography has always been a something I had come back to over the years and I finally decided to explore it more seriously and attend art school in San Francisco. Biology is the study of life through science and photography is the study of life through the camera lens.

When did you establish Helynn Ospina Photography? What type of services do you offer?

I started shooting professionally after I earned my MFA in photography in 2012. My work focuses on interiors, travel and fine art photography.

Travel and Interior photography are looking very different from each other. How did you balance them in your career?

Interiors/Architectural photography is very precise and technical. Travel photography is a bit the opposite its more emotional and fluid. They are the perfect compliment to each other.

Photographers are like some kind of illusionist. You show us the buildings, people or products much beautiful than they are. What is the secret?

This is a tough question - there is probably not one single secret to creating a beautiful photograph. I suspect every photographer might answer this differently, but for me having a clear sense of your voice as a photographer is very important and also understanding how light and composition can contribute to an image or detract from it.

What is the most important component of a spectacular interior photograph?

I think the same principals hold true here - Composition, Lighting, Vision and most importantly, storytelling. Having a clear idea of the story you are telling about a space helps you create well-balanced images.

How long does it take to prepare the room/kitchen/office to the interior photo shoot?

This varies depending on the size of the space and the design aesthetic. I have found that kitchen and living rooms seem to take the longest.

Which factors determine the project budget?

The number of rooms is the main factor in the cost of a shoot because it dictates the shot list and amount of time my team and I are needed.

How many hours or days does it take to complete post-production of photos?

I strive to capture everything in camera, which is why I light my interiors and spend a bit of time on ensuring the styling is perfect. Post-production is minimal and focuses mostly on removing cords, plugs etc.

What do you think about the effect of a good photograph on the customer's purchase decision?

In today's competitive market, professional photography is one of the most important investments you can make in your business. I work to capture the style and vision of each designer and my goal is to create images that my client will love! I think clients feel more comfortable presenting their work to the world when they have amazing photography. I recently met a homeowner who hired an architect client and they said the reason they hired the architect was because of the photography on their website.

Smartphones and affordably priced DSLR cams made everyone is more enthusiastic about photography. How did this affect the professional photo industry?

There are a place and time for these cameras but there is a lot more to being a professional photographer than just equipment. A professional photographer will get you results and knows how to approach the subject they are photographing. Hiring a professional with an excellent reputation ensures clients get a high-quality end product.

What do you think about social media? How do you use it for your profession?

It’s become an integral part of our world, especially for photographers. I can definitely be a powerful tool if used to its fullest potential.
