Tarisio, the global leader in auctions for rare stringed instruments and bows, has set another record. The rare handmade violin known as 'Baltic', produced by Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù in 1731, found a buyer for $9.44 million at an auction organized by Tarisio. With this sale, the 'Baltic' became the third highest priced musical instrument of all time sold at an auction. There are only 150 Guarneri violins in the world. The 'Baltic' has become the most expensive Guarneri violin ever to be auctioned.
The three most expensive musical instruments of all time sold at auctions became stringed instruments. And the most expensive three-stringed instrument in this history was auctioned and sold by Tarisio. In 2011, 'Lady Blunt' Stradivari was sold for $15.9 million, and 11 years later another Antonio Stradivari masterpiece, 'da Vinci', found its new owner for $15.34 million.
The 'Baltic', the rare 292-year-old Guarneri violin, has remained in the possession of many different families, collectors, and musicians for nearly three centuries. Some known owners include the Giese family, the Hammig family, the Sochaczewski family, Elihu Clement Wilson, Rembert Wurlitzer, George Gade, Steven Staryk, and Sau-Wing Lam. Handmade by Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù in 1731, the masterpiece was recorded as the third most expensive instrument after the two-stringed instrument by Antonio Stradivari.
