Like many festivals, the birth of Qixi Festival is based on a legend that has been passed down from generation to generation. Qixi Festival is dedicated to the meeting of Zhinü and Niulang in Chinese mythology and is celebrated on the seventh day of every seventh month of the lunar calendar.

Qixi Festival, where singles and couples give gifts to their romantic interests, is celebrated as a traditional holiday in Taiwan and Singapore, as well as in many countries in Asia. The tale of The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl, dating back 2600 years, has been celebrated as the Qixi Festival since the Han dynasty.

The forbidden love between Zhinü, the weaver girl, and Niulang, the cowherd, forms the basis of this legend. The romances of Zhinü, symbolizing the star Vega, and Niulang, symbolizing the star Altair, were not allowed, and they were exiled to opposite sides of the heavenly river, symbolizing the Milky Way. However, a flock of magpies form a bridge on the seventh day of the seventh month so that the separated love couple could meet once a year.

Qixi Festival has also become traditional to honor and celebrate this meeting. In ancient times, it was customary for women to make wishes to the stars Vega and Altair in the sky during the festival. The legend of Niulang and Zhinü still holds an important place in the hearts of many today.

To celebrate Qixi Festival 2022, Google released the Celine You-designed Doodle on August 4, which falls on the seventh day of the seventh month of this year's lunar calendar.
